I’ve open sourced about 474 projects since 2008, and been part of larger projects like Yeoman, Koa.js, and git-extras.
Learnings from 365 Days
- Don’t over burn yourself!
- Don’t get anxious - it’s just a streak
- Start as many projects/orgs as you can, collaborate with humans
- It took about 180 days for this to become a part of life
- Make new mistakes in public - that’s one of the finest ways to learn
- Accept negative criticism with a smile
- Ask people about their thoughts on IRC, Social Media
- Make sure your projects have good READMEs!
- Names of the repos matter a lot!
- Don’t wait for permission to send a PR or start an org
- Thank people who helped you, out loud
- Sometimes whatever you do need not be a success story
- Pickup new stuff, experiment a lot!
- Never stop! Getting burnt is common, but keep contributing
